Imagine the starter areas of the game... lots of level 4-5 monsters.
Now imagine coming back there as a level 20 character to fact level 24 monsters. |

HM?? Scary?? Naw just run around and kill stuff! anyways @OP. Normal mode is the way you play through the game at the first time, where monster levels are scaled in accordance of their position on the story line. Once you have beaten a campaign you will unlock HM (hard mode) which will make everything lvl20 or higher with better skills. e.g Hulking Stone Eles in ascalon post searing are lvl 3 in normal mode but in HM they are lvl 24 (AFAIK)

Older players were complaining that the game was no longer challenging. And that a number of skill additions and nerfs had made some areas easier and easier.
Hence Hard Mode was born, where all mobs(and their AI/levels/skills bars/group sizes) in all areas were buffed and gameplay meant solely for the advance players. The mystique of that didn't last long though. *shrugs *edit Thanks for pointing that out Hawk. :laughs: I looked at the dates too before posting, but the '08 felt normal. Still gonna be a while before it hits me that its already '09. Last edited by DarkFlame; Jan 06, 2009 at 10:26 PM // 22:26.. |

Yes, and then the screaming started about it being too hard, and bosses being impossible to beat. And that continues to today.
And, of course, there followed the bashing of ArenaNet for making you have to work at beating the game in Hard Mode. (The players capable of thinking about builds and strategy were quiet because they were busy playing the game.)
